As we go on the final leg of our preparations of the first ever Middle East Smartphone and Wireless Summit, in Dubai, my thoughts revert to the time when Arabcom was first launched in 1998. It was then the only forum and exhibition of its kind in the world for the Arab states. It was a daring initiative and a major pioneering effort, considering the technological state of the region then, and considering that as an Arab woman, I had to face and overcome the prevailing attitudes of the time.

The pioneering spirit has continued over the years. Last year we launched the first PDA event for the Arab states, followed this year by yet another first of its kind summit. This year's double event is expected to be the venue for the largest ever gathering of senior level wireless technology manufacturers, operators, regulators and others in the WiFi and WiMAX arena. This is also where the general public and potential users of these breakthrough technologies will get a chance to view the latest wireless products on display by the exhibitors, and listen to the hottest topics on the subject by an expert panel of speakers. There will be specific focus, as usual, on the rapidly evolving opportunities for these products and technologies in the Middle East marketplace.

Mobile computing solutions is among the foremost needs of the present times to keep pace with developments in other industries. Governments, companies and individuals are increasingly recognizing the improved efficiency, increased productivity and cost savings that can be gained by deploying mobile computing solutions in their daily operations. The coming Summits will only enhance this recognition, leading to key decisions that will impact the pace and quality of wireless development in the region.

I look forward to the excitement of once again meeting all our old corporate friends and business partners, as well as the pleasure of meeting new ones, at the Summits.

Sincerely
